Supporting Great British Luxury Fashion | Customer Spotlight: Burberry

Alice Cross |

We have some exceptional customers at Tacura, including some of the finest fashion houses in the UK, including luxury fashion brand Burberry.

Burberry is arguably one of the most recognisable, British luxury fashion brands in the world. Let's look at the history of this iconic fashion house and we will share the items you will find in their Tacura shopping basket.

Burberry was founded in 1856 when Thomas Burberry, a former draper's apprentice, opened his own store in Basingstoke. By 1870, the business had established itself by focusing on the development of outdoor attire. Soon after, in 1879, Burberry introduced gabardine to his brand, a hardwearing, water-resistant yet breathable fabric, in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving.

Adapted to meet the needs of military personnel, the famous Burberry "trench coat" was born during the First World War because British officers wore it in the trenches. Each detail of the Burberry trench coat serves a purpose: the epaulettes displayed insignia but could also display items such as gloves; the gun flap gave additional protection, the D-rings were used to attach military equipment; the storm shield allowed rain to run off more efficiently. (These features of a Burberry trench remain today). After the war, it became popular with civilians and remains one of the most recognised and sought-after garments that Burberry produce today.

In 1919 HM King George V grants Burberry its first Royal Warrant as a Tailor.

During the Second World War, Burberry supplied the British Army with a range of military apparel and accessories, including the trench coat. Burberry also catered for various other divisions of the British Armed Forces, including the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy, the Royal Pioneer Corps, the Officer Cadet Training Unit, and the Auxiliary Territorial Service - including the women’s division.

Many celebrated achievements followed for the brand, including a Royal Warrant by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1955 and several high-profile fashion shows in London, Paris, Milan, Brussels, Berlin, and Tokyo throughout the 1960s, bringing Burberry’s collections and inspiration to customers around the world and by 1965 Burberry were exporting one in five coats from Britain.

In 1972, Burberry acquired its factory in Castleford, Yorkshire, where it continues to make its heritage trench coats today. In 1990 the Burberry royal connections continued, with HRH The Prince of Wales granting a Royal Warrant as an Outfitter.

Years of physical and digital progression followed the brand, with worldwide online distribution, augmented reality experiences in stores and online and several sustainability initiatives being developed to support the brand’s growth across the world. In 2016, Burberry was recognised as the industry leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in the ‘Textiles, Apparel and Luxury Goods’ Sector.

In 2020, during the global COVID-19 Pandemic, Burberry retooled their factory in Castleford, to make Personal Protective Equipment for the British National Health Service. Burberry went above and beyond to show its support to the NHS and leveraged its global supply chain to manufacture and source more than 160,000 pieces of PPE that it donated to the UK National Health Service and healthcare charities.
